Plot summary
On November 7, 2000, the presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore leaves Florida's vote so close that a machine recount cannot settle it. In the early hours of November 8, Gore telephones Bush to concede, then withdraws the concession. His campaign sues to win hand recounts in counties it considers Democratic strongholds, alleging voting irregularities. Gore sends Warren Christopher to supervise the recount, while James Baker spearheads the Bush legal team in Florida, joined by Ben Ginsberg. Katherine Harris, Florida's secretary of state, draws Republican pressure tied to the duties of her office. Media, parties and the public give the hand recounts close attention.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Recount (2008)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Sydney Pollack was originally set to make Recount but withdrew weeks before filming due to an undisclosed illness and was replaced by Jay Roach; Pollack died of cancer on May 26, 2008, just one day after the film premiered on HBO.
- Warren Christopher, the real diplomat Gore sent to oversee the recount, publicly objected to how the film portrays him as naive, disputing a scene where his character tells James Baker he hoped for "diplomacy and compromise," insisting he actually knew from the start it would be a fight only one side could win.
