Plot summary
A spacecraft comes down in a lake in Vendel-era Scandinavia, and Kainan, its pilot, is the only one aboard who lives. A computer tells him that Earth is a seed colony his people gave up, and it puts the Norse language and culture into his head. He then finds a village that has been wrecked, and the warrior Wulfric seizes him and brings him to King Hrothgar's stronghold. Hrothgar fears that Gunnar, the chieftain of the ruined village, will hold Wulfric to blame. Kainan claims to come from the north and says he hunts a dragon.
