Plot summary
Sgt. Bob Benson, a heterosexual officer, is handed an undercover assignment after a string of killings in Los Angeles's gay community. He is paired with Fred Kerwin, a records clerk, and the two pose as a couple. Kerwin believes he is closeted, though his colleagues in the department already know his sexual identity. The pair learn of an earlier murder. Both of its victims, Davis and Clyde Thompson, had been featured in a gay magazine, and each had been phoned by a man with a hoarse voice who asked him to model. Benson poses for the magazine as well, and the hoarse-voiced man approaches him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Partners (1982)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The leading roles in Partners were first offered to Clint Eastwood and Woody Allen. Eastwood was interested only if Allen signed, and Allen declined; Alan Arkin, James Caan and Nick Nolte were also considered.
- Partners was rushed into production by Paramount in 1981 ahead of a feared Directors Guild of America strike, one of six films made with budgets between $4-8 million and a shortened pre-production process whose results the studio wanted to see.
- Director James Burrows said he almost cast Sam Elliott and Peter Riegert as the two cops, but Paramount chief Barry Diller didn't think he could sell the movie with them attached.
- Paramount president Michael Eisner said he "hated" the script for Partners, and Don Simpson lumped it in with the studio's other rush-job films, a grouping that produced a deal: Simpson would finish them on time and on budget if Eisner greenlit An Officer and a Gentleman, starring Richard Gere, Debra Winger and Louis Gossett Jr.
