Plot summary

To adopt a child, Graham Holt must attend classes and meet social workers regularly, an extended vetting process. Graham was raised by uncaring parents. James is a disturbed boy brought up in foster care, who remembers his mother only vaguely, from when he was three, and holds a vivid, romantic image of a father who is in and out of prison. When Graham and James meet, the silences between them show Graham's nervousness and James's fear. James crosses to Graham and puts his arms around Graham's waist, and Graham hugs him briefly. James also makes friends among the local children, racing with a bicycle.
