Plot summary
The entire British royal family, the House of Wyndham, is killed by an electrical accident during a portrait sitting outside Buckingham Palace. Sir Cedric Willingham leads the search for a surviving heir, and it ends with Ralph Jones, a Las Vegas lounge singer just fired from his job. His grandmother Constance had an affair with the first Duke of Warren, and a duplicate ring proves it. Ralph is flown to London for lessons in royal manners. He meets Miranda Greene, a timid dancer who wants to design clothes, and dares her to date him if the press confirms his claim. Lord Percival Graves, patriarch of the House of Stuart, wants the crown for his own line, though Prime Minister Geoffrey Hale holds that Ralph keeps it unless he commits a heinous act.
