Plot summary
Wild Bill Hickok, a deputy U.S. marshal, is quick to shoot when a man knocks his hat from his head. He retires from the law and performs in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show until a medical examination finds glaucoma that threatens his sight and his aim. In Cheyenne, Will Plummer, whose brother Hickok killed and whom Hickok left crippled two years before, calls him out, and to even the odds Hickok has himself tied to a chair and carried into the street. Hickok and Charley Prince ride on to Deadwood, where the town greets him with fanfare and he reunites with Calamity Jane.

- Director Walter Hill said there was 'always a kind of tension' between him and star Jeff Bridges because Bridges did a lot of takes while Hill did not, and Hill found that performers go stale with endless repetition.
- Budget ruled out the planned Santa Fe locations used by the earlier Wyatt Earp and Tombstone, so the film shot in Los Angeles, with the Gene Autry Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita, California, standing in for Deadwood.
