Plot summary
Ten filmmakers set a short piece each to an operatic aria, with almost no dialogue and the words sung in Italian, French or German. King Zog I of Albania travels to Vienna in 1931 to visit a lover while opponents lie in wait. Three London children who venerate a statue of the Virgin Mary take a luxury car and set it on fire. Two young cleaners in a gym watch the bodybuilders. A movie producer brings a German starlet to the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, unaware that his wife is staying there. In a wintry Bruges, empty buildings and deserted streets are intercut with two lovers in a bed chamber. At a Paris theater in 1734, an opera preview is staged before inmates of a mental asylum. An opera singer of long standing performs for the last time.
