Plot summary
A bedtime story tells a young Hellboy how humans once warred with magical creatures: the Golden Army, King Balor's mechanical force, devastated humanity, so Balor made a truce and the crown that commands the army was broken into three pieces. In the present, Balor's exiled son Prince Nuada sets out to gather them, and his twin sister Princess Nuala flees with the last piece. Hellboy chafes at the secrecy the B.P.R.D. must keep and clashes with his girlfriend, Liz Sherman. After he allows himself to be seen while investigating a slaughter at an auction, his superiors put the ectoplasmic medium Johann Krauss in charge of him. The trail leads the team to a troll market under the Brooklyn Bridge, where Abe Sapien finds Nuala.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Because a computer-generated glass fishbowl helmet was too costly, the filmmakers built an actual one for Johann Krauss and hid the actor's head under the glass with mirror and perspective tricks; two puppeteers, Alexander and Dodd, shared the heavy contraption.
- Mr. Wink's giant metal fist was made of heavy plastic so it stayed light enough for motors to work the mechanical fingers, and it could be physically detached and used as a projectile without any CGI.
- Guillermo del Toro had previously cast Luke Goss as the mutant vampire Jared Nomak in Blade II, and approached him to play Prince Nuada in Hellboy II; the only other actor considered for the part was Charlie Hunnam.
- Seth MacFarlane voices Johann Krauss, taking over from Thomas Kretschmann after Guillermo del Toro decided that Kretschmann's voice and the mechanical sound effects of the suit did not mesh well.
- Hellboy II: The Golden Army was the first American production to shoot at Korda Studios, a facility newly built outside Budapest, Hungary, where Guillermo del Toro filmed from June to December 2007.
- Guillermo del Toro first pitched a premise involving four Titans from the four corners of Earth, wind, water, fire and earth, to Revolution Studios, before replacing them with a Golden Army.
