Plot summary

A lonely widow longs for a child. A witch gives her a barley seed, and when the widow plants it, a flower grows. From the flower comes Thumbelina, a girl no larger than a thumb, and the widow raises her as her own daughter. Thumbelina loves her mother but wishes for a companion her own size. One night she sings, and Prince Cornelius, the fairy prince, hears her. He is the first person she meets who is close to her height. They ride on his bumblebee and fall in love. Mrs. Toad hears the singing and wants Thumbelina for her son Grundel, so she takes the tiny girl away into the woods. Thumbelina wants to return to her mother and to Cornelius.
