Plot summary
Robin "Stormy" Weathers, just out of law school, chafes at case filing and research while he waits for a courtroom of his own. When a trial is set to begin that afternoon, he keeps the schedule to himself so that his firm, having no one else familiar with the file, must let him try it. His client, bank president Raymond Torkenson, admits to striking banker Phil Ames and wants the one-day proceeding stretched to three days to drive up the other man's legal fees. Weathers builds a First Amendment argument over a single word, and the case draws reporters. His superiors try to fire him; Torkenson threatens to move the bank's business. Then the firm assigns him to defend university professor Douglas Benoit, accused of killing Liza Williams.
