Plot summary
The Olympians imprisoned the rebel Titans beneath Mount Tartarus, and the Epirus Bow was lost. In 1228 BC the genocidal king Hyperion scours Greece for that bow, meaning to set the Titans free, and he seizes the oracle Phaedra so her visions will point him to it. Theseus, a hoplite drilled by the Old Man, is told the gods have chosen him. He and Aethra, his mother, are outcasts, and he is a bastard child. Hyperion's soldiers descend on their village, and Theseus, after cutting down many of them, is taken captive. Athena and the other Olympians pity the humans suffering at Hyperion's hands, but Zeus forbids them to interfere in mortal affairs.
