Plot summary
On the Macedonian coast, Ergenia comes to Hercules with an offer from her father, King Cotys. Hercules, who calls himself the demigod son of Zeus, leads a band of mercenaries: the prophet Amphiaraus, the thief Autolycus, the mute barbarian Tydeus, the Amazon archer Atalanta and his nephew Iolaus. In exchange for his weight in gold, he agrees to prepare the soldiers of Thrace for war against Rhesus, a warlord said to work sorcery. When Rhesus reaches central Thrace, Cotys orders the army out anyway, and half of it dies after the Bessi turn against them. Hercules and his companions drill the survivors, then march with them to meet Rhesus near Mount Asticus.
