Plot summary
Adam and Eve are vampires. Married for centuries, they now live half a world apart. Adam's cluttered Victorian mansion in Detroit holds vintage instruments and recording equipment. Rather than feed on people directly, he pays Dr. Watson at a blood bank for O negative, coming in the dead of night disguised as Dr. Faust. Ian, a young music fan, brings him guitars and assorted curiosities, among them a wooden bullet. Withdrawn and contemptuous of the humans he calls zombies, Adam is unhappy when fans turn up at his door, and Ian offers to spread rumors that he lives elsewhere. Eve, in Tangier, gets her blood from their old friend Christopher Marlowe, who staged his own death long ago. When Adam's voice on the phone betrays his despair, she packs her books and prepares to fly to him.

- Tom Hiddleston replaced Michael Fassbender in the cast in January 2012, before filming on Only Lovers Left Alive began.
- Jim Jarmusch spent seven years frustrated trying to finance the film, and Tilda Swinton told him the delay was good news: it would happen when it needed to happen.
