Plot summary
At a psychiatric clinic, a small group of Catholics tries to exorcise a patient named Henry Birdson, who suffers seizures and fills page after page with numbers. The rite fails, Henry lapses into unconsciousness and Father Lareaux is left weak. Maya Larkin, a schoolteacher in the New York City diocese who once went through an exorcism herself, takes the notes away. Her group believes Satan means to take a human body, as God did in Jesus. Read as a polyalphabetic substitution, the numbers give her a name: Peter Kelson, a writer who studies serial killers and pathological narcissism. She brings him what she has found, but Peter, whose uncle Father James brought him up, rejects the idea of evil incarnate.
