Plot summary
Bull McCabe is an Irish farmer in the early 1930s who is deeply attached to the rented field his family has worked for generations and improved from barren ground. A donkey turns up dead in a lake, and its owner blames McCabe and demands blood money. The field's owner, a widow, decides to sell it at public auction rather than to McCabe directly. In the village pub, McCabe announces that no local man would dare bid against him. Peter, an American whose ancestors came from the area, arrives with plans for a hydro-electric plant and for quarrying stone for new roads, and the field is central to those plans. McCabe's son Tadhg works the land with him, and McCabe doubts whether Tadhg can safeguard it.

- In 1996 the Irish Post Office, An Post, issued a set of stamps marking the centenary of Irish cinema, and its 32p stamp carried an image from The Field of actors Harris, Bean and Hurt standing against the backdrop of Killary Harbour.
- The Field's screenplay went through several revisions triggered by changes to the cast: when Seán McGinley took a role the town priest's part was expanded, and the English resident William Dee was replaced by a sympathetic Irish American, Peter, played by Tom Berenger.
