Biography

Tim Curry was an English actor and singer whose screen and stage career spanned nearly six decades and more than 240 credits. Born in Grappenhall, Cheshire, he studied English and drama at the University of Birmingham and made his professional debut in the original London production of Hair in 1968. He became widely known for creating Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show and for playing him again in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). He earned three Tony nominations, for Amadeus, My Favorite Year and Spamalot, and two Olivier nominations. On screen he appeared in Annie (1982), Legend (1985), Clue (1985), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), The Three Musketeers (1993) and Muppet Treasure Island (1996), played Pennywise in the miniseries It, and won a Daytime Emmy for voicing Captain Hook.

  1. Getting ready for a role

    Curry chose an English accent for Dr. Frank-N-Furter after hearing an English woman ask, "Do you have a house in town or a house in the country?" He then decided the character should sound like the Queen.

  2. Getting ready for a role

    In 1985, Ridley Scott cast Curry as the Lord of Darkness in the fantasy film Legend after seeing him in Rocky Horror. Applying the Darkness makeup took five and a half hours, and Curry spent an hour in a bath to dissolve the spirit gum.

    Curry explained that his memoir Vagabond took its name from the 17th century criminal code, in which actors were grouped with thieves and vagabonds.
