Plot summary

Girl and boy squirrels find small footprints in the snow, and their mother says the prints are too small for a Gruffalo. She tells them about the Gruffalo's child, who wants to chase a hedgehog into the trees. Her father stops her and warns her about the Big Bad Mouse, a strong monster with fiery eyes, a scaly tail and whiskers tougher than wire. The child imagines the mouse just as he describes it. That night she leaves the cave and heads out into the snow to find him.
