Plot summary
Quentin Crisp, an English writer and gay iconoclast, leaves London for New York City in the late 1970s. Celebrities and artists embrace him there, and he becomes a local celebrity and then a national one, writing for New York magazines. The account moves between his public life and his private one. His agent is Connie Clausen, and Phillip Steele, a figure drawn from two of his friends, is another of the people around him. Crisp's reaction to AIDS seems cavalier, and he makes flippant remarks during the crisis that he will not take back. He struggles to find his way through them as he grows older.
