Plot summary
Grace and her father, a gangster called Mulligan, drive through rural Alabama in 1933 with a convoy of gunmen and halt outside the plantation Manderlay. A woman comes out of its gates, saying that someone inside is about to be whipped for a stolen bottle of wine. Grace enters and learns that slavery still governs Manderlay under a code named Mam's Law, about seventy years after emancipation. She refuses to travel on. She keeps part of her father's gunmen and his lawyer, Joseph, and stays to secure the transition of the people there to freedom. Taking charge of the plantation, she draws up contracts that make the white family the workers and the black inhabitants the owners of the land and its cotton, and teaches them about democracy and racial equality.
