Plot summary
Two strands run side by side: the life of Henry Fonda and the history of the United States. The account begins with his Dutch ancestors' arrival in the seventeenth century and reaches the 1980s, when another actor from the movies held the presidency. Fonda's voice, from a long interview recorded in 1981, joins the figures he embodied, while reflections spoken in voice-over tie history, popular culture and politics to the images. Filmed locations in the United States, among them Omaha, where Fonda grew up, and the village of Fonda, New York, are mixed with archive material: film clips, paintings, photographs and historical sound recordings.
