Plot summary
In the summer of 1349 the plague reaches northern Germany. Minstrels make their way to Hamelin for the wedding of the Mayor's daughter and the Baron's son. The groom wants her dowry to pay his army, and his father, the Baron, taxes the townspeople to build a cathedral that he believes will save his soul. A Jewish apothecary in the town looks for a treatment for the plague, and the priests accuse him of witchcraft. Among the minstrels is one whose music has soothed the Mayor's daughter; he offers to clear the rats from Hamelin for a fee, and the Mayor agrees.
