Plot summary

Seventeen years after an attempt to cool the planet with the compound CW-7 backfired and buried the Earth in ice, the last survivors travel aboard the Snowpiercer, a self-sustaining train that circles the globe on a perpetual-motion engine. Wilford, the magnate behind it, lives beside the engine at the front. The wealthy ride in the front cars, while the poor are packed into the tail compartments, where Minister Mason's armed guards keep order and children are taken from their parents. Gilliam, an elder of the tail section, urges Curtis Everett and Edgar to rise up, and they free Namgoong Minsoo, a security specialist, and his clairvoyant daughter Yona, so the passengers can push forward through the train.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Snowpiercer (2013)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Harvey Weinstein, then an owner of The Weinstein Company, demanded that 25 minutes be cut from Snowpiercer, asking for less dialogue and more action. Bong Joon Ho lied to him, claiming his father was a fisherman, to save the film's fish-gutting scene.
  • The physical-effects team Flash SFX built a gimbal system supporting train cars weighing close to 100 tons, able to simulate the sideways motions, vibrations and make-believe curves of track for the film's train.
  • Minister Mason was originally written as a middle-aged man, and Bong Joon Ho first talked to John C. Reilly about playing the part before changing it and offering it to Tilda Swinton.
  • Wilford was the last role cast in the film, and it was Bong Joon Ho's friend and fellow filmmaker Park Chan-Wook who suggested Ed Harris for the part.
  • Hiding Chris Evans's muscle mass was, according to Bong Joon Ho, the hardest part of working with him: Curtis was meant to have eaten only protein blocks for 17 years in the tail section, so costume and make-up had to conceal his physique.
  • John Hurt played the one-legged Gilliam with one leg strapped behind him, staggering on crutches he had to make look as if he had been using them for years.
