Trailer

Plot summary

Harry Potter is left as a baby with his only living relatives, the Dursleys, who keep him ignorant of magic and make him live under the stairs. As his eleventh birthday approaches, letters addressed to him flood the house. Rubeus Hagrid arrives to fetch him and reveals that Harry's parents were a witch and a wizard murdered by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, and that Harry survived the attack with a lightning bolt-shaped scar. Hagrid takes him to Diagon Alley for school supplies, and Harry learns he is famous in the wizarding world. He travels to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, joins Gryffindor, and starts learning magic. In a forbidden corridor, the three find a giant three-headed dog.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Director Chris Columbus had wanted Daniel Radcliffe for Harry Potter ever since seeing him in a BBC production of David Copperfield, but casting director Susan Figgis said Radcliffe's protective parents would not allow it for fear he would lose a normal childhood; Columbus's persistence in pushing for Radcliffe is said to have led to Figgis resigning from the production.
  • According to casting director Susan Figgis, Robin Williams wanted to play Hagrid, but he was turned down because director Chris Columbus insisted on casting only British and Irish actors.
  • Tim Roth was the original choice to play Severus Snape but turned the part down to appear in Planet of the Apes instead, while Sean Connery and Christopher Lee both declined to play Albus Dumbledore, with Lee choosing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring instead.
  • Richard Harris initially turned down the role of Albus Dumbledore, only agreeing to play the Hogwarts headmaster after his granddaughter told him she would never speak to him again if he refused.
  • Because the film used the American title Sorcerer's Stone instead of the UK's Philosopher's Stone, every scene that named the object had to be filmed twice, once with each version of the line.
  • Comedian Rik Mayall was cast to play the poltergeist Peeves, but his scenes were entirely cut from the finished film and have never been released to the public.
  • To promote the film, Warner Bros. struck a marketing partnership with Coca-Cola reportedly worth as much as $150 million, though some estimates put its true value closer to $40-50 million worldwide.
  • Because the film's American title was different, every scene that mentions the philosopher's stone by name had to be shot twice: once with the actors saying "philosopher's" and once with "sorcerer's".
