Biography

Jackie Chan is a Hong Kong actor, martial artist and filmmaker known for slapstick comedy, acrobatic fights and stunts he performs himself. Trained at the China Drama Academy in acrobatics, martial arts and acting as one of the Seven Little Fortunes, he entered the film industry as a stuntman. His breakthrough came with Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (1978) and Drunken Master (1978), while Project A (1983) saw his stunt team formally established and his signature style take shape. Police Story (1985) won Best Film at the Hong Kong Film Awards, and Rumble in the Bronx (1995) brought him into the North American mainstream. He found Hollywood success as Chief Inspector Lee in Rush Hour (1998) and its two sequels, and he played the martial arts mentor Mr. Han in The Karate Kid (2010). His voice work includes the Kung Fu Panda films, and he received an honorary Academy Award in 2016.

    Chan turned down the role of Simon Phoenix in Demolition Man because he refused early Hollywood offers to play villains and avoid being typecast; Wesley Snipes took the part.
