Plot summary
A job at a car factory takes Sherry Parker and her son Dre from Detroit to Beijing. In his new class he meets Meiying, a violinist who returns his interest, and that draws the anger of Cheng, a kung fu prodigy with family ties to her. Cheng and his friends beat and humiliate Dre. Mr. Han, the maintenance man in Dre's building, drives them off and shows that he knows kung fu. Dre asks Han to teach him, and Han takes him to Cheng's teacher, Master Li, to make peace. Li wants a fight, and agrees to hold it at a tournament, leaving Dre alone until then. Han starts Dre on hours of taking off a jacket and hanging it up.
