Plot summary
Little Mute's father was killed by a masked bandit, and the memory of that fight stays with him. He does not speak, and as a new student at the Shaolin monastery he falls behind the others and struggles with the tasks his instructor sets. One night he trails two monks to a hidden cave behind a waterfall, where a man is held captive. Little Mute steals food and wine from the monastery and brings them to him, and the two become friends. Their captive is a martial artist of deadly skill, working out a technique he calls the Lion's Roar, and he takes Little Mute as a pupil in a style built to kill an opponent as quickly as possible. A Shaolin nun tells him that martial arts exist for self-development, not killing, and teaches him the Gliding Snake style.
