Plot summary
Chon Wang is a clumsy Imperial Guard in the Forbidden City. Princess Pei Pei, facing an arranged marriage, leaves for the United States, and Wang, who failed to stop her, insists on joining the guards sent to bring her back. His uncle, the Royal Interpreter, allows him to come. In Nevada their train is robbed by Roy O'Bannon's gang, and Wang is left to continue alone. He finds Roy half-buried in the desert, and the two brawl when they meet again in a tavern. In jail they trade stories, and Roy, tempted by the gold ransom, offers to help find the princess.

- The hero of the film, a Chinese Imperial Guard in the Forbidden City in 1881, is named Chon Wang, which is a homophone for John Wayne.
- In January 1999, following the success of Rush Hour, Spyglass formally greenlit the film under its new title of Shanghai Noon, having developed it under another name.
- Curtis Armstrong had a role in the film, playing a character named Bulldog Drummond, but these scenes were deleted before the finished version reached cinemas.
