Plot summary
Mountain trolls wipe out a band of travelers, and the only survivor, a baby boy, floats downriver in a basket and is adopted by a monk. Years afterward the same trolls overrun a village and carry off forty-nine children. Liuer saves one baby girl from them and, chased for it, takes refuge in a cave, where he unknowingly releases Sun Wukong, sealed there by the Buddha five hundred years earlier for rebelling against Heaven. The Monkey King drives the trolls off, but a remnant of the Buddha's seal keeps his magic from him; harnessing it causes him pain, so he fights with his hands alone. Liuer and the girl question him endlessly, not knowing his magic is gone.
