Plot summary
In 1872, Lau Xing, a Chinese thief, steals a jade Buddha kept at the Bank of England, then hides out with Phileas Fogg, an eccentric London inventor, and gives his name as Passepartout when he is taken on as Fogg's valet. The Buddha belongs to Lord Kelvin, who leads the Royal Academy of Science. Its fellows mock Fogg's ideas, and when Fogg calculates that the globe can be circled in eighty days, Kelvin offers to hand over his position if Fogg manages it, provided Fogg gives up science if he does not. Fogg accepts, and Passepartout joins him, seeing a way home. In Paris, painter Monique La Roche comes along, and Lord Kelvin has sent General Fang after the statue.
