Plot summary
Bribes found among the dead of a neutralized enemy band turn the Han commanders against the Protection Squad of the Western Regions, and its captain, Huo An, is sent with his men to rebuild the ruined fortress of Wild Geese Gate, where workers, peasants and prisoners of nomadic groups live. When a starving Roman legion arrives, led by Lucius, it is escorting Publius, a blind boy and the youngest son of Marcus Licinius Crassus. Huo An rides out and duels Lucius to a standstill; a sandstorm and the Romans' hunger end the fight, and Huo An lets them inside to recover. The Romans help the workers rebuild with their engineering skill. Then word comes that Tiberius is marching with a hundred thousand soldiers to claim the Silk Road.

The real Publius was no blind boy: he was a seasoned Roman army officer at least 30 years old, wounded and a suicide to avoid capture at Carrhae, and he had no confirmed brother named Tiberius, his only brother being Marcus Licinius Crassus the Younger.
