Plot summary
Jason Tripitikas, a South Boston teenager obsessed with kung fu movies and Chinese culture, browses a Chinatown pawnshop and spots a golden staff. Old Hop tells him a man left it with his grandfather years ago and never came back for it. Walking home, Jason is forced by Lupo's gang to help rob the shop. Old Hop is shot, and Jason flees with the staff, told to deliver it to its owner. Pulled off a rooftop, he wakes in ancient China, where soldiers raid a village. The drunken scholar Lu Yan saves him and recounts how the Jade Warlord Erlang Shen tricked the Monkey King Sun Wukong into setting his staff aside, then turned him to stone, though the staff had been hurled far away. A prophecy says a Seeker will bring it back and free him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Forbidden Kingdom is regarded as the first co-production helmed by an American director to make a primarily English-language wuxia film set in ancient China for a global audience, and it was heavily promoted as the first film starring both Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
- Filming action scenes together for the first time, Jackie Chan said he had not worked with anyone he was that comfortable with, in movements, rhythm and natural reactions, in the last 10 years: other partners usually needed more than 10 takes, but when he fought Jet Li the actions were quick.
- Before filming began the entire cast did a costume fitting and a script read through, at which certain dialogues were altered to suit the different actors' English speaking abilities, as the majority of the cast had English as their second language.
