Plot summary
The Royal Hong Kong Police Force sets up an undercover operation to arrest crime lord Chu Tao, stationing officers in a shantytown. The criminals notice them, a shootout breaks out, and residents scatter. Chu Tao and his crew drive away, crash, and run; Chan Ka Kui chases them onto a double-decker bus and makes the driver stop by aiming his revolver. Chief Inspector Raymond Li scolds him for the mess, then presents him to reporters as a model officer. His new assignment is to guard Selina Fong, Chu Tao's secretary, who faces pressure to testify about her employer's activities. She tells him she does not need protection, so a fellow officer stages a break-in at her apartment; she becomes more cooperative. Hitmen then ambush the two of them in her car.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Police Story (1985)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- While filming the shopping mall climax, Jackie Chan slid down a pole from several stories up; the lights wrapped around it had heated the pole so much that he suffered second-degree burns, mostly to his hands, and he also hurt his back and dislocated his pelvis on landing.
- The mall shoot was under strict time pressure because the shopping mall had to be cleaned up and reopened for business the next morning; before Chan did his pole slide, one of his stuntmen hugged him and gave him a Buddhist prayer paper that he tucked into his trousers.
- The climactic shopping mall fight, in which a huge number of panes of sugar glass were smashed, earned the film the nickname "Glass Story" from the crew.
- Stuntman Blackie Ko doubled for Jackie Chan in a motorcycle stunt where Chan's character rides through glass at a hitman; in the double-decker bus scene Chan used a metal umbrella because a wooden one kept slipping as he hung on.
- Screenwriter Edward Tang did not write the film the way Hollywood screenwriters normally work: Chan told him to build it around a list of props and locations, such as a shopping mall, a village and a bus.
- The Hong Kong TV series Police Report used the Police Story theme song, sung by Jackie Chan, as its own theme between 1994 and 2004; since 2009 the same song was re-adopted for the show, this time sung by Hacken Lee.
- The shanty town chase in Police Story inspired a similar sequence in Bad Boys II, and a similar scene appeared in the 2004 Thai film Born to Fight.
