Plot summary
In Melbourne, television chef Jackie, who has a successful cooking show, crosses paths with Diana, a journalist who has recorded a cocaine deal between the mob boss Giancarlo and a street gang called The Demons. The meeting turns into a gunfight, and Diana flees with the videotape while her partner Richard is caught. She runs into Jackie on the street, and he fights off the men chasing her. Driving away in his car, she drops her tape into a box of his cooking videos. Jackie gives the tape to Romeo, his adoptive brother and a police officer, and Romeo's children watch it without knowing what it shows.

- New Line Cinema paid Golden Harvest US$6 million for the international rights outside Asia, then gave the film a partial dub, a new score and more than 13 minutes of cuts, mostly violence, especially against women, and cuts for pacing.
- Jackie Chan said film buyers no longer wanted to see Sammo Hung in movies, so he called him up and they made Mr. Nice Guy together, noting that Hung could now only direct, not act.
- Jackie Chan hurt his neck when he messed up a flip during a fight scene and also broke his nose while filming Mr. Nice Guy, injuries he wrote about in his book I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action.
- Mr. Nice Guy was first planned as the fifth film in Jackie Chan's Police Story series, set in Sydney, but within a month it was revised into a stand-alone film set in Melbourne; it was Chan's first film scripted and shot in English.
