Plot summary
The Qing Dynasty has held China for some 250 years, and by the early twentieth century the country is falling apart. Factions fight one another, people go hungry, and political reforms have only made things worse. A seven-year-old emperor sits on the throne, with Empress Longyu behind him. Huang Xing has returned from Japan, where he studied modern warfare, and finds his homeland in pieces. He joins Sun Yat-sen in the campaign to end the dynasty and establish a republic. Their cause also takes in the Second Guangzhou Uprising of 27 April 1911 and the Wuchang Uprising of 1911.
