Plot summary
Snakehead, a crime lord, obtains an old book from a Chinese bookstore keeper. The book describes a boy chosen once in a thousand years to join the medallion's two halves. In Hong Kong, police inspector Eddie Yang and Interpol agent Arthur Watson raid the temple where Snakehead's men are about to seize that boy, Jai, and the agents bring the boy out while Snakehead gets away. Two weeks later Snakehead takes Jai from a cargo boat in the harbor, and his men carry the boy off to Dublin. Eddie is assigned to Ireland to assist Interpol, to Watson's annoyance, and there he finds Nicole James again. He captures one of Snakehead's top men, who says Jai is held in the harbor.

- With a projected budget of $35 million, The Medallion was at the time the most expensive Hong Kong production ever made, and the deal made co-writer Bennett Joshua Davlin the highest paid screenwriter in Asia.
- The version audiences saw is a heavily trimmed one. The original cut of about 108 minutes explained Snakehead's human smuggling syndicate and his plan to raise an army of Highbinders; all of that was cut to concentrate on the medallion, and some dialogue, including a little Cantonese, had to be overdubbed.

More than 20 minutes of cut material survives on the American DVD, including alternative endings in which Jackie Chan's Eddie prevents Nicole's death, and a longer fight between Eddie and Snakehead's men.- The Irish setting was a late switch: the filmmakers had planned to shoot in Australia but were talked into Dublin, using Dublin Castle and the Wicklow countryside, and the shoot broke off in 2001 so Jackie Chan could make The Tuxedo.
