Biography

Sammo Hung Kam-bo is a Hong Kong performer and filmmaker whose career spans acting, martial arts choreography and directing. Born in Hong Kong, he trained at the China Drama Academy from 1961 and became the leading member of the Seven Little Fortunes. He joined Shaw Brothers in 1966, working his way from extra and stuntman to action director, and moved to Golden Harvest in 1970, choreographing fights and appearing in Enter the Dragon (1973). He began directing with The Iron Fisted Monk (1977) and Enter the Fat Dragon (1978). With Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao he made Project A (1983) and Dragons Forever (1988), while his choreography for Wheels on Meals (1984) shaped 1980s action. He headlined the CBS series Martial Law from 1998 to 2000 and later appeared in SPL: Kill Zone (2005), Ip Man 2 (2010) and The Legend Is Born: Ip Man (2010), and in 2010 was honored at the New York Asian Film Festival.

In 1998, CBS put Martial Law on Saturday nights, an action-drama centered on Hung. The hour-long shows became a surprise success and made him the only East Asian to headline a prime-time network series.
Own stunts
Golden Harvest sent Hung to Korea to work as a choreographer on films with director Huang Feng. There he trained in hapkido with Master Ji Han-Jae and got his black belt.
A first
For his directorial debut, The Iron Fisted Monk in 1977, Hung leaned into comedy. Many consider that movie the first true kung fu comedy film.
A role that slipped away
Hung did the preliminary martial arts choreography on Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle but left the film midway, and Yuen Woo-ping, who was credited, completed it.
