Plot summary
China in the Warlord Era is divided among feuding warlords who fight over neighboring territory. Hou Jie, a young and arrogant commander, defeats his rival Huo Long and takes control of Dengfeng. Huo Long flees into Shaolin Temple, and Hou Jie follows him there, kills him on temple ground and ridicules the monks before he leaves. Hou Jie's fortunes then collapse. His household is destroyed, and he has nothing left. He returns to the temple and the monks take him in. The cook, Wudao, feeds him and gives him shelter while Hou Jie studies Shaolin teachings and martial arts, looking for a way to answer for what he has done. Around the temple, unrest spreads and the people who live there bear the cost.
