Plot summary
Li Fong is a kung fu prodigy training at the Beijing wuguan of his great-uncle, Mr. Han. When his mother, a doctor, takes a job in New York City, she makes him promise to give up martial arts, a condition that followed the death of his older brother Bo after a tournament. In New York, Li struggles at school and becomes friends with Mia Lipani, whose father Victor, a former boxing champion, runs a pizza shop. Mia's ex-boyfriend Conor Day, a local karate champion, punches Li and later beats him in a fight at school. Mr. Han travels to New York and brings in Daniel LaRusso, a karate sensei, to add Miyagi-Do karate to Li's kung fu training before the Five Boroughs Tournament.
