Plot summary
Shih Shao-Feng is hunting Shaolin disciples to wipe the school out. At a remote training camp the best student, Yun Fei, is chosen to bring him down. On his way he befriends Tan Feng, a blacksmith. Yun Fei reaches Shih's camp and attacks, but his Shaolin technique cannot get past the extended iron claw, and Shih's eight bodyguards, armed with swords, shields and spears, take over the fight. The blacksmith helps Yun Fei get away. In a village he finds Shih's men pulling the place apart and taking what they want to frighten the villagers into submitting. Tan Feng brings in two more allies, among them a swordsman who has not drawn his weapon since an accident killed the woman he loved. Together they form a coalition against Shih.

- Jackie Chan was knocked out for around 20 minutes while performing stunts for Hand of Death. John Woo recalled the stunt had Chan launched backwards on wires after being kicked mid-air, so that he landed on his head and lost consciousness.
- Hand of Death is the only film collaboration to bring together Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao of the Seven Little Fortunes at the China Drama Academy with Chiang Sheng, Lu Feng and Philip Kwok, the Venom Mob performers from Taiwan's Fu Sheng Opera School.
