Trailer

Plot summary

A mutagenic ooze in the sewers of New York City transforms Splinter, a rat, and four turtle brothers into humanoid mutants. Splinter raises the brothers as his sons, wary of humans after being chased off, and trains them in ninjutsu, letting them leave home only to steal supplies. Fifteen years later, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo long for ordinary teenage lives, and they befriend April O'Neil, an aspiring journalist digging into thefts of technology taken from a company called TCRI by a criminal named Superfly. The brothers see a chance to help her and to show the city what they can be.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • In July 2022, Seth Rogen texted director Jeff Rowe that the film was "fundamentally broken" and had to change completely; over the next four months it was rewritten and boarded into its final state.
  • The SAG-AFTRA strike kept Seth Rogen and the cast from promoting the film, which The Hollywood Reporter said may have cut its box office earnings by 15%, with insiders guessing a $7-10 million loss.
  • Shredder was written out as the main villain so the film could have a mutant the Turtles could relate to and be tempted by, and Superfly began as a mutated Baxter Stockman before the two became separate characters.
  • Splinter's kataginu is cut from a bathrobe, he wears sweatpants, and his look was inspired by Jeff Bridges's Dude in The Big Lebowski, while his build was modeled on Danny DeVito.
  • Against the norm for animation, the cast recorded their voice roles together in groups instead of separately, with up to seven actors in one session, letting them play off each other and improvise.
  • Mutant Mayhem marks the first time all four Turtles are portrayed by teenage actors; Seth Rogen said casting teenagers made it stand out and "really opened up our version".
  • To recruit Jackie Chan, director Jeff Rowe wrote him a letter asking if he wanted to be in a Turtles film, and Ice Cube signed on after laughing at his character's name, Superfly, also citing his and his son's connection to the franchise.
  • Mikros Animation's test shot for the film was 40 seconds of Donatello talking, and visual effects supervisor Matthieu Rouxel recalled Rowe's benchmark: "If the picture looks like a 2D painting when it is not moving, that means we are good".
