Biography

Born in Lansing, Michigan, and raised partly in Florida, Burt Reynolds was an American actor who began in television with Gunsmoke, Hawk, and Dan August before his breakthrough as Lewis Medlock in Deliverance (1972). He became a leading man in White Lightning (1973), The Longest Yard (1974), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), Hooper (1978), The Cannonball Run (1981), and Sharky's Machine (1981), directing some of his films. He earned two Golden Globe nominations for musical or comedy acting and was the top money-making star from 1978 to 1982. After box-office setbacks, he returned to television in Evening Shade (1990 to 1994), winning a Golden Globe and an Emmy. His role as Jack Horner in Boogie Nights (1997) won a Golden Globe for supporting actor and brought nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. He died in 2018.
