Plot summary
A 61-year-old safecracker from New York, Ernie Mullins now works in Portland, Oregon, and lives in a tract home at the edge of the city. He meets Mike, a nosy, amiable kid, during a house break-in, and takes him on as a lookout and apprentice. They pull a few jobs together. Ernie keeps a paying arrangement with a prostitute, Delphine, who introduces Mike to her apprentice, Carrie. Mike spends his new money on possessions.

- Bill Forsyth wanted John Mahoney for the lead in Breaking In, but Act III Productions pushed for a higher-profile name; Jack Nicholson and Paul Newman were each offered the part and declined, so Burt Reynolds was eventually asked to take it.
- Breaking In gave Burt Reynolds his first character role; he said he had spent an entire career "making the characters me" and that this was the first time he did it the other way around.
- Burt Reynolds worked for SAG scale on Breaking In because he was an admirer of the script and of its director, Bill Forsyth.
