Plot summary
The board of the National Gallery in London wants Mr. Bean gone, but its sentimental chairman blocks the dismissal, so the directors send the careless watchman to Los Angeles for three months instead. There he is to represent the gallery at the unveiling of Whistler's Mother, which the Grierson Art Gallery has bought from the Musée d'Orsay. The gallery's curator, David Langley, takes Bean for an art scholar named Dr. Bean and invites him to live with his family for two months, despite the objections of his wife Alison and their children, Kevin and Jennifer. Bean's stay brings chaos to Los Angeles, including an arrest at the airport, and trouble for David's marriage.

- North American and international audiences saw different films: only the North American cut has the dinner party scene in which Bean loses his watch in the turkey and gets his head stuck inside it, a gag recycled from the television special "Merry Christmas Mr. Bean".
- Rowan Atkinson said the two different cuts exist because test screening audiences in North America and elsewhere reacted in very different ways to the same scenes.
- Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson recorded Alice Cooper's "Elected" for the soundtrack, with Mr. Bean's campaign promises dubbed over it; the track had already been used for Comic Relief in 1992.
