Plot summary

Catherine Crocker runs from her violent husband Willard, a rich man determined to bring her back even though she does not love him. On the road she stumbles into the preparations for a train robbery, and in the confusion two thieves, Dawes and Billy, seize her. The gang's leader, Jay Grobart, keeps her from harm as they ride. Lapchance, a railroad detective, takes up the chase with a posse, and Willard rides with him. Catherine learns that Grobart once had a Native American wife, Cat Dancing, and that he keeps much of his past to himself. Thrown together on the trail, the two grow close, with the posse and her husband following behind.
