Jimmy Bly is a rookie sensation in the Champ Car season with five wins already behind him, and his run draws the resentment of Beau Brandenburg, the defending champion and points leader, who blames his uneven form on his fiancée Sophia Simone and ends their engagement. As Beau returns to form, Jimmy starts making driving errors, and his team owner Carl Henry sees a repeat of what happened to his former driver Joe Tanto. - Director Renny Harlin later said the production suffered from "too many chefs in the kitchen," with the plot and characters changed several times, and admitted he was not happy with the final result himself.
- Driven picked up seven Golden Raspberry nominations at the 22nd Razzies, including a joint Worst Screen Couple nod for Burt Reynolds and Sylvester Stallone and separate Worst Supporting Actor nominations for each of them, while Estella Warren won Worst Supporting Actress, also cited for Planet of the Apes.
- Stallone was seen at many Formula One races before production, but he was unable to procure enough information about the category due to the secrecy with which teams protect their cars, so he decided to base the film on the CART racing series instead.
- When Stallone's character Joe Tanto arrives at a race early in the film, there is a long shot of him walking in and saying hello to various people; one very brief uncredited cameo in it contains Dustin Hoffman in racing gear.
