Plot summary
Sully Sullivan runs the news desk at Satellite News Network, a cable station in Chicago. His ex-wife Christy Colleran works there as a reporter. She takes a vacation, meets Blaine Bingham, and returns engaged to him. She tells Sully that she is leaving the station and will marry Blaine in New York in two days. Sully sends her to cover the execution of Ike Roscoe, a convicted murderer. He also has the junior reporter Siegenthaler buy up the tickets out of town.

- The male lead, news director John "Sully" Sullivan, was meant to be played by Michael Caine, but Caine was held up filming Jaws: The Revenge, so Burt Reynolds took the part instead.
