Plot summary
A breakup with his girlfriend left Ross McElwee unable to keep his personal and professional concerns apart, and the historical film he had planned shifted toward romance, religion and the women around him. His sister, half serious and half joking, told him the camera could be a way to meet women. He talks with the women he meets along the route, and the result is a personal essay that mixes fiction and nonfiction. The Cold War and the threat of nuclear war run through it, as does the complicated legacy of Sherman's campaign. McElwee worked alone, carrying a camera and a small recorder, and arrived without a list of questions, letting conversations go where they would.

- Ross McElwee first set out to film General William Tecumseh Sherman's Civil War campaign through Georgia and the Carolinas, but a romantic breakup just before shooting pushed him to make the film about the women in his life, romance and religion instead.
- McElwee said his earlier film Backyard used a Nagra 4 tape recorder that weighed 20 pounds and hung over his shoulder, while for Sherman's March he switched to a miniature Nagra SN that fit on his belt, making shooting much easier.
- Daniels' 2022 film Everything Everywhere All At Once drew on Sherman's March, especially its exploration of the concept of modal realism.
