Plot summary
A night of drinking leaves suspended police officer Joe Paris with a headache, blood on his shirt and no memory of his whereabouts. Detectives arrest him after his blood turns up on the murder weapon used on extortionist Jake Farley, whose body was found strangled beneath a bridge. Public defender Jenny Hudson is assigned to represent him. He insists he is innocent but has no alibi, and she turns down the prosecution's plea offers. Almost everyone who dealt with Farley had a reason to want him dead, and Paris has enemies of his own, while an unidentified patrol car shadows the two of them.
