Plot summary
Ernest "Stick" Stickley walks out of prison after seven years for armed robbery, and an old friend, Rainy, talks him into making one stop near the Florida Everglades before heading home. The stop is a drug deal arranged by Rainy's dealer, Chucky, and it collapses; Stick escapes and hides, because the people involved want no witnesses. He helps Barry Braham, a wealthy eccentric, get into his locked car, and Barry hires him as a chauffeur. The job gives Stick a home and a routine, and he tries to make up lost time with his teenage daughter, Katie, while growing close to Kyle, Barry's financial consultant. Stick asks Chucky for the money owed to Rainy, hoping to start over, and Chucky refuses.

SPOILER
Stuntman Dar Robinson, who played the albino hitman Moke in Stick, filmed his character's death scene by free falling from the side of a building while firing a gun, using his own invention, a decelerator; the braking device let cameras shoot from above without a visible airbag.- The studio pulled Stick from its release schedule and asked Burt Reynolds to reshoot the second half, bringing in a new writer and a subplot in which his character reunites with his daughter after prison.
- Burt Reynolds said he decided to keep his mouth shut and swallow hard, that the experience was devastating, and that he did not want to direct again for another four years.
- Dar Robinson's role in Stick was his only true acting credit; the stuntman died in an on-set motorcycle accident during the making of Million Dollar Mystery in 1986.
