Plot summary
Big and Little Enos Burdette have a new seafood restaurant to promote, so they offer Sheriff Buford T. Justice $250,000 against his badge if he can move a giant shark statue from Miami to Austin. Buford refuses and retires, then finds retirement dull and accepts. He collects the shark and sets off with his son, Junior, while the Burdettes lay traps along the route. Buford gets past each one, so they hire Cledus Snow, who leaves his semi at home, disguises himself as the Bandit, takes a black and gold Pontiac Trans Am from Bo Darville's garage, and goes after the shark. Dusty Trails, who has just left her job at a used car dealership, joins him.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film was originally shot with Jackie Gleason playing both Sheriff Buford T. Justice and the Bandit himself, but when test audiences found Gleason's dual role confusing, the studio ordered reshoots and brought in Jerry Reed to replace him as the Bandit.
- The black Trans Am driven by Cledus as the fake Bandit was, uniquely for the trilogy, the third-generation model that would later become famous as the near-identical base vehicle for KITT on the TV series Knight Rider.
